Matthew 4:5-7 – A Temptation to Test God

|| Luke 4:9-12

MT4:5 Then the Devil took Jesus along into the Holy City[1] and stationed him on the Temple[2] battlement MT4:6 and the Devil said to him, “If you are a son of The God hurl yourself down, for it has been written [in Psalms],[3] ‘He will give His angels charge regarding you and upon their hands they will lift you so you will never strike your foot[4] upon a stone.’” [Psalm 91:11, 12] MT4:7 Jesus replied to the Devil: “Again it is written,[5] ‘You shall not put YHWH your God to the test.’[6] [Deuteronomy 6:16]

After being led by the Pneuma to be tempted into the desert [see also (James 1:13,)] Jeshua, the son of God, was taken to  the pinnacle of the temple, to overlook the city of Jerusalem, which has to be the capital of the Kingdom of God. Jesus once again is mislead by the thoughts which promise him that angels on their hands shall bear Jesus up when he jumps from the high wall.

Jesus did not want to test God. He had enough trust in Him and knew everything would happen like God had it in His Plan according His time set. Jesus also did not need a sign to have a proof who he was.  He was well aware that he was a son of David, a son of Abraham and a son of God. He also knew very well that God is the Most Powerful of all beings. He did not have to get a prove of that.  Satan, the adversary of God, also knows it very well that God is the Omniscience, Omnipotent, Absolute Sovereign. Both knew how the Elohim Hashem is the Most High Almighty Who conducts His army of angels like He wants to do it.

Jesus himself had to believe he was a son of God, like we should have to believe that as well likewise that Jesus is the sent one from God and not God Himself.

“”I tell you the truth, whoever hears my word and believes him who sent me has eternal life and will not be condemned; he has crossed over from death to life.” (John 5:24 NIV)

In this world we may find lots of people who want to find out if God really exist or would do this or that for them. We also may find lots of people who have changed their god because when they prayed, asking their god to do a certain thing, when he did not do that, they left him or her. (This happens a lot in South America, where so called Catholics have a pleiade of gods and goddesses.)

In this fragment we do hear again one of the many “ifs” the adversary of God sows in the world.
He brings up to the sent one from God:

  1. If thou be the Son of God, turn stones into bread {#Mt 4:3 }
  2. If thou be the Son of God, leap from the top of the temple {#Mt 4:6 }

which shall later be repeated

At the Cross, if thou be the Son of God, come down from the cross

  1. The cry of the rabble {#Mt 27:40 }
  2. The cry of the soldiers {#Lu 23:37 }
  3. The cry of the thief {#Lu 23:39 }

Today in Christendom we still find lots of people who still not want to believe Jesus is the son of God, but prefer to make him a god son, hoping that he would do more and better things than his heavenly Father the Only One True God. They keep preferring to believe in some one who could be seen instead of trusting the One no man can see and live.

[1] Holy City: Jerusalem. The New Jerusalem is called “the holy city” in the Book of Revelation (Revelation 11:2; 21:2, 10; 22:19).

[2] Temple: The Greek here is HIEROU.

[3] It has been written [in Psalms]: The Devil quotes Scripture. The quotation is Psalm 91:11, 12.

[4] Your foot: Is there a sarcastic allusion to Genesis 3:15?

[5] Written: The quotation is from Deuteronomy 6:16.

[6] Test: Compare 1 Corinthians 10:9.

  1. ”I tell you the truth, whoever hears my word and believes him who sent me has eternal life and will not be condemned; he has crossed over from death to life.” (John 5:24 NIV).
    This is important. And open to interpretation.
    If you take it literally,
    like I do,
    it may have a different message.
    There is room for all sorts of interpretation in God’s world.
    After all he made us able to think.
    And able to create, things like the bible.
    The one thing I know I don’t like so much is people telling me how God thinks, what he wants from me, because after all, they are not God, so why should they presume to speak for him?
    God communicates.
    If you listen, long and hard (for me many fruitless decades), God speaks to you directly, and that is all that matters.
    I would never speak for him,
    except to say I perceived him as overwhelming love,
    for everyone.
    Everyone.
    He is better than us.
    All we can do is try to understand.

    • Being made in the image of God we all have some element, call it DNA if you wish, from God. By having something of God in us we all should have a certain feeling of Him. He calls people to come to Him. If we are opening our mind we would be able to hear the Call of God. When we are willing to open up our mind for god His Word we shall be able to hear Him.

      It is god Who has sent Jesus to the earth to declare The Most High Elohim. Jesus asks us to believe That One Who has sent him. If we are willing to believe that God of Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, Jesus and his disciple, we shall be blessed with the insight God is willing to give to us. Man shall never be able to decipher god or being able to tell others how God thinks. The man is void to decipher God’s thinking. The Thinking of God beats all man’s thinking. We can not speak for God, but we should let His word be known to as many people as we can. We should try to do our utmost best to come to understand God His Words and to help others to understand that Most Important Word of God. The son of God, Jeshua (Jesus Christ) also asked his followers to help spread the news of the coming Kingdom of God. Each person who is calling himself or herself “Christian” should follow the teachings of Christ and keep to what he has asked of his followers, following him or going in his footsteps.(hence the name for ‘hanging on Christ’).

      Let us therefore share the Gospel of Good News with as many as we can, with the possibilities which God gives to us, each with his or her own talents, and always with the knowledge that it is God Who gives wisdom and insight plus the power to do things in His Name. Like Jesus could do nothing without his heavenly Father we can do nothing with God either.

    • Please let us also ad the quotes from Scripture

      John 3:18 Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe stands condemned already because he has not believed in the name of God’s one and only Son.
      John 12:44 ¶ Then Jesus cried out, “When a man believes in me, he does not believe in me only, but in the one who sent me.
      John 20:31 But these are written that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in his name.
      1 John 5:13 I write these things to you who believe in the name of the Son of God so that you may know that you have eternal life.

      Pointing to the fact how important it is to believe Jesus is the sent one from God and not God Himself.

      “Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe stands condemned already because he has not believed in the name of God’s one and only Son.” (John 3:18 NIV)

      “He that heareth my word” How may we know, then, to which of these two classes we belong? The lord or master teacher Jeshua (praised be his name, which is above all others except God His Name!) replies, “he that hears His word, and believes Him who sent him” (believes the Father by hearing Christ), has everlasting life (such is the quickening power of God His word which is given by Christ and by the other prophets who wrote down the Words of God), and shall not come into judgement.

      Jesus came to declare God and showed mankind the Way to God. God cannnot die but Jesus really did die after he had put away his own will and preferred to do the Will of his heavenly Father, even when that would cost his life. After being killed by man Jeshua after three days in hell passed from death into life. Simple and wonderful testimony!
      The judgement will glorify the Messiah in the case of those who have despised him here and did not want to accept it that he as the sent one from God, as man of flesh, bones and blood really could fulfil the task given by his heavenly Father and could do what no man had ever done before him, offering himself as a Lamb of God for the remission of sins.

      Believe in Jesus is the important element which should bind all Christians together as united in Christ like Christ was united with his heavenly Father. The possession of eternal life, that they may not come into judgement, is the portion of those who believe.

      We should all not only come to love those who abide in the biblical truth, but show respect to all other creatures of God, showing the same love Christ had for all creatures of God.
