Mark 11:7-11 – Entry Into Jerusalem

MK11:7 They brought the colt to Jesus and threw their garments over it and Jesus sat on the colt. MK11:8 Others spread their garments on the road and still others cut down tree branches and spread them in the path. MK11:9 Now those in front and those behind all kept crying aloud: “Hosanna![1] Blessed is he coming in the YHWH’s name! [Psalm 118:25, 26] MK11:10 Blessed be the kingdom of our forefather David[2] coming in YHWH’s[3] name! Hosanna in the highest!” MK11:11 Then Jesus entered into Jerusalem and the Temple courtyard,[4] and after he examined the whole view, since it was near night-time, he went his way into Bethany with the Twelve.

[1] Hosanna: Or, Save we pray, God bless him. The crowd quotes Psalm 118:25, 26 in their proclamation.

[2] Kingdom of our forefather David: Compare 2 Samuel 7:6. The whole scene is in fulfillment of Zechariah 9:9 though Mark does not go into detail here with his Roman audience.

[3] YHWH: The language is borrowed from Psalm 118 where the Divine Name occurs in the Hebrew Text. The Greek here may suggest YHWH originally belong here.

[4] Temple courtyard: The Greek is HIERON and is the word used for the entire temple compound with its various courtyards. The word for the temple proper is NAOS.
