Matthew 27:45-50 – Jesus Expires During a Darkness

MT27:45 Now from high noon a darkness occurred over the land[1] until three o’clock. MT27:46 About three in the afternoon Jesus screamed in a loud voice, “Eli, eli, lama sabachthani?”[2] (or, “‘My God, my God, why have You abandoned me?’[3]) [Psalm 22:1] MT27:47 But some of those standing around thought Jesus was calling for Elijah. MT27:48 And immediately one in the crowd ran and placed a sponge filled with sour wine on a stick and offered it to Jesus to drink. MT27:49 The rest of the crowd said, “Leave him alone! Let us see if Elijah comes to save him!” Another took a spear and pierced[4] Jesus in his side and then blood and water discharged. MT27:50 Now after Jesus again cried out with a loud voice he gave up the pneuma.[5]

[1] Darkness occurred over the land: PME: darkness spread over the whole countryside.

[2] Eli, eli, lama sabachthani: A Hebrew (Aramaic) phrase from Psalm 22:1. This near-death outburst seems to indicate the language Jesus normally spoke, Hebrew (Aramaic).

[3] My God, my God, why have You abandoned me: Near the moment of his death the Nazarene quotes Psalm 22:1 in his outcry. Jesus thus applies Psalm 22 to himself. Read and meditate on this Psalm which seems to describe 1,000 years before Christ a man dying on a stake. Note Psalm 22:16 (Septuagint), “They pierced my hands and feet.”

[4] Another took a spear and pierced: John 19:34 adds, “… one of the soldiers jabbed his side with a spear.” Compare Isaiah 53:5 and Zechariah 12:10 (Revelation 1:7).

[5] He gave up the pneuma: Or, KJV: yielded up the ghost; PME: and died; MOF: gave up his spirit; RIEU: yielded up his life; NEB: breathed his last; BER: dismissed his spirit. The literal meaning of PNEUMA is breath or wind.

MT23:37 “Jerusalem! Jerusalem! Killer of prophets, stoner of those sent [by God] to her. How often I wished to gather your children together just as a hen gathers her chicks under her wings – but you did not wish it. MT23:38 Look! Your House is deserted [to desolation].[1] MT23:39 For I tell you: You will not see me again until indeed you say, ‘Blessed is the one coming in the Name of YHWH.’[2] [Psalm 118:26]

[1] Your House is deserted [to desolation]: If “house” (OIKOS) is the same as Luke 11:51 then the Temple is meant here. This is exactly what Jesus goes on to discuss in the next chapter. Or, NEB: look! there is your temple, forsaken by God.

[2] Blessed is the one coming in the Name of YHWH: This is a quotation of Psalm 118:26,

“Blessed be the One coming in the name of Jehovah.” See notes elsewhere under YHWH whether the Nazarene actually used the Divine Name in his quote.

MT9:35 Then Jesus went around all the towns and villages, preaching in their synagogues[1] the good news[2] of the Kingdom,[3] curing every disease and malady. MT9:36 But, observing the crowds Jesus felt sympathy[4] for them because they were torn and downtrodden[5] as if they were sheep without a shepherd. MT9:37 Then Jesus told his disciples,

“Surely, the harvest is huge, but the workers few. MT9:38 So, you disciples beg[6] the Master of the harvest[7] so that He might push[8] workers into His harvest.”

[1] Synagogues: Like Paul after him, Jesus uses the Jewish synagogue to spread his Gospel.

[2] Good news: The Greek is EUANGELION which means “good angel” or “good message” and thus “Gospel” or Evangel. RHM: glad-message.

[3] Of the Kingdom: The entire phrase, “the good news of the Kingdom,” occurs 6 times in the Christian Bible (Matthew 4:23; 9:35; 24:14; Luke 4:43; 8:1; Acts 8:12). This Gospel of the Kingdom may include the Father’s Kingdom but it may possibly be limited to that opportunity to enter the Realm of Profession, the Son’s kingdom (Matthew 13:41-43; Colossians 1:13).

[4] Sympathy: The Greek is ESPLAGKHNISTHE and is rendered: KJV: compassion; WEY: pity; PME: deeply moved.

[5] Torn and downtrodden: The Greek text of the KJV is slightly different than W&H and N&A. The whole phrase is also rendered: KJV: fainted, and were scattered; ASV: distressed and scattered; BER: mangled and thrown to the ground; WEY: distracted and dejected. The image of confused and frightened sheep, mistreated and abused, and abandoned by the shepherds is starkly clear.

[6] Beg: The word is rendered: KJV: pray; LAM: urge.

[7] The Master of the harvest: The Greek is KURIOU and may be rendered “master.” LAM: owner. Jesus means his Father.

[8] Push: The Greek is EKBALA and is related to the same word for casting out or exorcising demons. The word “send” seems to gentle for the meaning here. KIT: thrust out; RHM: thrust forth.
