Matthew 26:6-13 – A Woman to Be Remembered

MT26:6 Now when Jesus was visiting the house of Simon the leper[1] in Bethany,[2] MT26:7 a woman approached Jesus with an alabaster case of very expensive aromatic oil.[3] While Jesus was reclining at table, she began pouring oil upon his head. MT26:8 But the disciples became indignant[4] when they observed this, saying, “Why this waste?[5] MT26:9 This oil could have been sold for a lot and given to the poor.” MT26:10 Realizing their thinking Jesus told them, “Why trouble this woman?[6] For she has done something admirable[7] to me. MT26:11 For you will always have the poor among you.[8] [Deuteronomy 15:11] MT26:12 This woman, by putting this aromatic oil on my body, has prepared it for burial.[9] MT26:13 I tell you this truth: Wherever the Gospel is preached throughout the whole world of humanity, what this woman did will be repeated in her memory.”[10]

[1] Simon the leper: Some think him that one of Matthew 8:2.

[2] Bethany: That small village a few miles from Jerusalem. Lazarus and his two sisters lived her.

[3] Expensive aromatic oil: The Greek is MYROU. Or, KJV: very precious ointment; NEB: small bottle of fragrant oil, very costly.

[4] Became indignant: Or, RHM: greatly displeased.

[5] Why this waste: Mark 14:5 adds, “… sold for upward of three hundred denarii” and thus gives us its worth: about a year’s wages. It is only John who reveals the real speaker: Judas (John 12:4).

[6] Why trouble this woman: Or, RHM: why vex; BER: embarrass; MON: annoying; NOR: don’t find fault with; PME: why make this woman feel uncomfortable.

[7] She has done something admirable: Or, KJV: she hath wrought a good work upon me; RHM: a seemly work; RSV: a beautiful thing; WEY: a gracious thing; KNX: she did well to treat me so; BAS: she has done a kind act.

[8] You will always have the poor among you: The phrase is so close to Deuteronomy 15:11 to be a strong allusion. Mark 14:7 adds, “… and whenever you want to you can always do them good.” This was something the apostles kept in mind for Paul writes about his instructions from the apostles at Galatians 2:10, “… we should keep the poor in mind.”

[9] Has prepared it for burial: Or, MOF: she has acted in view of my burial.

[10] Repeated in her memory: Or, KNX: to preserve her memory; PME: as her memorial to me; RSV: what she has done will be told in memory of her. Her charity and kindness becomes a permanent part of the Gospel by Jesus’ own command. With our imagined sense of smell we know that throughout the following period our Lord gave off a most pleasurable perfume. Compare 2 Corinthians 2:14-16.

MT21:15 Now the chief priests and Scribes became incensed[1] when they saw the awesome things[2] Jesus did as well as all the boys[3] yelling, “Hosanna to the Son of David!” MT21:16 The priests and Scribes asked Jesus, “Do you hear what they are saying?” But, Jesus answered them, “Indeed! Did you never read: ‘Out of the mouth of babes[4] and sucklings[5] You arranged praise’?”[6] [Psalm 8:2 LXX] MT21:17 Departing from them Jesus went outside the city into the village of Bethany[7] and found lodging there.

[1] Became incensed: Or, KJV: sore displeased; ASV: moved with indignation; KNX: greatly angered; BER: chagrined; NOR: became furious; BECK: they didn’t like it at all.

[2] Awesome things: The Greek is THAUMASIA and related English words mean “miracles” or “magic” (wonders). Or, KJV: wonderful things; RHM: marvels; NOR: works of power.

[3] All the boys: Elsewhere these are described as “disciples.”

[4] Out of the mouth of babes: A quote from Psalm 8:2 (LXX). Jesus had called his disciples elsewhere as little boys or little children.

[5] Sucklings: Or, KNX: infants at the breast; NASB: nursing babes. Compare the metaphor at 1 Peter 2:2.

[6] Arranged praise: Or, KJV: perfected praise; RIEU: ordained; NASB: prepared; NW: furnished.

[7] Bethany: Possibly staying with Lazarus and his sisters. For their own reasons the Synoptics omit the resurrection of Lazarus while John records it.

10 Nisan An entrance for a king

On the 10th of Nisan, the day the Hebrews were each one to take a lamb for themselves, according to their fathers’ households, a lamb for each household (Exodus 12:3), Jesus came to Jerusalem to do according to the law and to have a paschal lamb, ‘days later on 14 Nisan, with his closest friends.

Jesus had lodged at Bethany, a village not far from Jerusalem, for some time; at a supper there the night before Mary had taken a pound of ointment of spikenard, very costly to anoint the feet of Jesus, (John 12:3).

Jesus travelled much, and his custom was to travel on foot from Galilee to Jerusalem, some scores of miles, which was both humbling and toilsome; many a dirty weary step he had when he went about doing good.This time he knew his time had come and asked to get an ass so he could fulfil the prophecy of Zechariah and people would come to see the sent one from God as a king.

“Rejoice greatly, O Daughter of Zion! Shout, Daughter of Jerusalem! See, your king {Or King } comes to you, righteous and having salvation, gentle and riding on a donkey, on a colt, the foal of a donkey.” (Zec 9:9 NIV)

On previous occasions, when the people sought to make Jesus a king, after witnessing his marvellous works, he withdrew himself from them to wait for their ardour to cool, knowing that the Father’s time was not yet due. This time he was aware the time had come, his heavenly Father wanting him to present himself as a paschal Lamb before God. Instead of hindering he helped on the enthusiasm of the folks by sending for a colt and to have cast their garments on him; and he sat upon him. Their laying the garments upon the ass, and throwing them in the way, was a custom they used towards princes, as appears not only by many records out of profane authors, but from 2 Kings 9:13, where the like was done to Jehu, upon his being anointed king over Israel. For the acclamations, they were also such as were usual to princes.

And many people spread their cloaks on the road, while others spread branches they had cut in the fields.

Those who went ahead and those who followed shouted,

“Hosanna!”

Can you imagine the faces of his disciples who at last saw their dream of their master becoming king coming closer. The whole multitude of the disciples began to rejoice and praise God with a loud voice for all the mighty works that they had seen; saying,

Blessed be the King that cometh in the name of the Lord.
Peace in heaven, and glory in the highest.

Previously there had been the wise men from the east who had looked for the one who had to be anointed as king. Now the people at the gates of Jerusalem looked on Jesus as the anointed one, the Son of David and the Messiah. The Pharisees (some of which it seemed had mixed themselves with this multitude) were troubled at the acclamation, and (as Luke tells us) asked the Nazarene to rebuke them; but he answered,

If these should hold their peace, the stones would immediately cry out.

It is a proverbial expression, the sense of which is alone to be attended. The sense is this:

The time is come, set by my Father for the publication of my kingdom, and declaring what I am; and when God’s time is come the thing must come to pass, by one means or another. If these children of Abraham should hold their peace, God is able of these stones to raise up children to Abraham, and they should do the same thing, publish me as the Son of David, the King in Zion.

John also gives us some account of this, (John 12:12-13)
