Fellowship over meals

After God made a covenant with the People of Israel at Mount Sinai, Moses and the 70 leaders of Israel

“saw God, and they ate and drank.” (Exodus 24:11)

the did not literally saw God but felt His nearness. Every year Gods People also came together for a special meal, remembering how the Most High was willing to come to the help of those that worshipped Him. It was the most significant meal in the Tanakh (Old Testament) that God required the People to eat and as such Jesus (the Nazarene Jeshua, being a devout Jew) also took every year, as required by Scriptures, the occasion to have a Passover meal with those he loved.

And this day shall be unto you for a memorial; and ye shall keep it a feast to the LORD throughout your generations; ye shall keep it a feast by an ordinance for ever. Seven days shall ye eat unleavened bread; even the first day ye shall put away leaven out of your houses: for whosoever eateth leavened bread from the first day until the seventh day, that soul shall be cut off from Israel. And in the first day there shall be an holy convocation, and in the seventh day there shall be an holy convocation to you; no manner of work shall be done in them, save that which every man must eat, that only may be done of you. And ye shall observe the feast of unleavened bread; for in this selfsame day have I brought your armies out of the land of Egypt: therefore shall ye observe this day in your generations by an ordinance for ever.

Jesus had more than once had meals with common people, sinners and publicans as well intimate meals with his beloved ones. We may not forget it was not generally accepted to have friendship with publican, because they were detested by the Jews at that time, because they were the tax collectors and had a reputation of adding their own greedy motives to the amount they collected. Just like the fishermen, when the master teachers asked the tax-collector Matthew to follow him, he went with Jesus, who wanted those who wanted to be his disciples to follow him in his word and not to be slaves of sin. When Jesus knew his time was coming to an end the master wanted to have the yearly memorial meal with his beloved in an upper-room in Jerusalem.

This coming week, on the first night of Passover (Passover Seder: Friday, April 19), believers who participate in the traditional Jewish Passover meal (known as a Seder) will have the opportunity to celebrate and enter into fellowship with Jeshua (Jesus Christ) as he instructed his disciples to do, the night he was betrayed and arrested.

Over the centuries, this Passover meal evolved into a lengthy ritual, and we don’t know for certain which parts of the custom existed at the time of Jeshua. We do know that Messiah’s last meal with his disciples included the breaking of bread and drinking of wine, as do Jewish meals to this day, and that is the part Jeshua or Jesus wants us to remember the most.

As Jeshua’s disciples gathered together for their final meal with him, Jesus blessed the bread, broke it, and said,

“This is My body given for you; do this in remembrance of Me” (Luke 22:19).

In Christendom we can find lots of people who first of all think Jesus is God, Who would have come to earth and Who would through a mysterious process come into the bread itself. This is called transubstantiation and is practised by Catholics, Anglicans, and Orthodox Christians, such as Greek, Ukrainian, Ethiopian, etc. as well as other denominations.

However, in the ancient Jewish practice of sacrificial offerings that God instituted, nothing ever transformed from one substance into another substance.  Rather, most of the animal offerings were killed and eaten.

When Jesus said

“This is my body”

he did not have the intention to have those around him to believe the bread would have become part of his body.

Jesus often spoke about himself in metaphors, especially in terms of bread and life.

He said,

“I am the bread of life”

and

 “I am the living bread that came down from heaven.”  (John 6:35, 51)

Throughout history we can see how God provide the food (literal and spiritual) for His people. The manna was bread for man. The spiritual manna now was this sent one from God, the Nazarene master teacher Jeshua, Jesus Christ.

Jesus his teaching about eating his body and drinking his blood should be taken as a figure of speech, having the spiritual manna provided and represented by those symbols.

Then Jesus said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Except ye eat the flesh of the Son of man, and drink his blood, ye have no life in you. Whoso eateth my flesh, and drinketh my blood, hath eternal life; and I will raise him up at the last day. For my flesh is meat indeed, and my blood is drink indeed. He that eateth my flesh, and drinketh my blood, dwelleth in me, and I in him. As the living Father hath sent me, and I live by the Father: so he that eateth me, even he shall live by me. This is that bread which came down from heaven: not as your fathers did eat manna, and are dead: he that eateth of this bread shall live for ever.

Symbolically consuming the Word of God is not a foreign concept in Judaism and Jesus is seen as that Word of God having come into the flesh.

When we shall come together this Friday night we shall have a gathering where we remember those last hours of our master teacher. Assembled we shall feel united with brothers and sisters all over the world, gathering in private houses or in prayer halls (Kingdom halls or churches).

When we at the meeting come to eat the bread and drink the wine at the Passover meal this coming Friday night (April 19), we shall remember how we have been delivered from an eternal spiritual death that God provided through the sacrifice of His only begotten beloved son Jesus (Jeshua) him being
“the Lamb of God who takes away the sins of the world” (John 1:29).
With our sins paid for, his sacrifice heals any broken fellowship we had with God so we can freely commune with Him.
Coming together several times a year, we remember that moment of the Last Supper and once a year we remember it especially for two reasons, the liberation of Israel from Egypt, standing for the liberation of slavery from man, and secondly the liberation from the curse of death, by Jesus giving himself as a ransom for the sins of all.
All those meals we share in the year are just a reflection of that exceptional meal Jesus had in Jerusalem. The one night of fellowship on 14 Nisan is especially to remember those liberation acts provided by the Most High. By our gathering we show our thankfulness, but also our unity with all those who remember that Pesach Seder, all over the world. With all of them we have a united fellowship as brothers and sisters, being part of One Great Family, as children of God.
Christ has made know the path of freedom by his word to those who believe him and live in the truth. When calling ourselves “Christian”, “Jeshuaist” or “children of God” we should show others our unity and our “family”, showing them we are really following the real Christ and not the false dogmatic person who is part of a so called “holy Trinity”. Jesus worshipped not himself, but his heavenly Father, the Only One true God, the God of Abraham Who is an eternal Spirit (having no beginning or no birth and no end or no death). At the Memorial Meal Jesus had with his apostles he honoured that Singular God and expects from all his followers also to praise that One Supreme Being Who gave light and salvation to the world.
So, let us come together Friday night to remember how the Most High provided for the liberation of Israel and provided also for a lamb that brought salvation for Jews and non-Jews, to be liberated from the chains of death, being thankful that those who live in Christ’s word are free.

Most important weekend of the year 2016

Assembled together on the night before he died, Jeshua and his disciples and closest friends came together in an upper room to celebrate the Passover meal.  They recalled the great story of deliverance: how the people of Israel had been freed from bondage and slavery by God’s power through the prophet Moses.  They remembered how the blood of the lamb marked the lintel and doorposts so that the Angel of Death would pass by the people as it brought devastation to the land of Egypt.  They ate the unleavened bread, mindful that the Israelites were in such a hurry to depart Egypt that their own bread had not yet risen.

That night the 14th of Nisan is one Jesus wanted to be remembered for an other occasion as well. Not only had his followers to remember the deliverance of God’s Chosen People, the Israelites, but now their rabbi had opened they way for others than Jews.

By his own example the sent one from God showed how his followers had to become servants for God and for the People of God. Like Jesus had called for people to follow him, the apostles had to come to do so too. They too had to become as humble as Christ was. As a sign of humbleness Jesus washed the feet of his disciples. The work which is reserved for servants Jesus did and he also asked them to do the same for one another.  There is no ambiguity in this moment, no chance to say it is merely a symbol.  Christ shows them what to do and tells them to do it (John 13:1-15); the path that leads to freedom from sin and death is marked by our care for our brothers and sisters.  Simply put, our lives are meant to be offered for others – giving ourselves in service.

In the end, in life which passes so quickly and everything is vanity (like Solomon writes in today’s reading – Ecclesiastes 1) everything turns around “Giving and Receiving”.  We all have received the Grace of God by the sent one from God, who is the son of man and the son of God, who gave his life for our sins.

Like Jesus offered himself as a lamb of God to have his blood as a signpost to deliver us from the punishment of death, we too should offer our lives as we are strengthened by the Messiah and are giving life-spirit by the blood of Christ, being partakers in the Body of Christ.

Thanks to the ransom offer brought by Jesus God blesses us with the gift of life and faith so that we in turn might be a gift to those around us.

As God commanded to remember the night the firstborns of Israel where saved so also Jesus asked his followers to remember the day he gave his body and poured out his blood for the salvation of mankind.

Long before the Mosaic Law covenant was altered, Jehovah foretold through the prophet Jeremiah that He would make with the nation of Israel “a new covenant.”

32 It will not be like the covenant that I made with their forefathers on the day I took hold of their hand to lead them out of the land of Egypt,+ ‘my covenant that they broke,+ although I was their true master,’* declares Jehovah.”

33 “For this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel after those days,” declares Jehovah. “I will put my law within them,+ and in their heart I will write it.+ And I will become their God, and they will become my people.”+(Jeremiah 31:32, 33)

Throughout history we have seen how God made Himself a people. For a very long time it was for the People of Israel that there was a covenant on which they could count. One of the regulations or demands was to remember how the exodus from Egypt was made possible. That putting of blood at the doorposts could also considered as a signature of choosing for God, which made it possible to be passed over for damnation or destruction. After that event there was still a need of offers to be brought to the temple or synagogue. But on the 14th of Nisan Jesus spoke about an other offer which would not have to be repeated any more and which would be sufficient for all times. though that offer would not take away the remembrance of the liberation marks.

Jesus came to institute and Evening Meal on Nisan 14, 33 C.E. Speaking of the cup of wine, he told his 11 faithful apostles:

“This cup means the new covenant by virtue of my blood, which is to be poured out in your behalf.” (Luke 22:20)

Matthew’s account quotes Jesus as saying regarding the wine:

“This means my ‘blood of the covenant,’ which is to be poured out in behalf of many for forgiveness of sins.” (Matt. 26:27, 28)

Jesus’ shed blood validates the new covenant. That blood also makes possible the forgiveness of sins once and for all time.

A few years later the apostle Paul would remind the new followers

14 Therefore, my beloved ones, flee from idolatry.+ 15 I speak as to men with discernment; judge for yourselves what I say. 16 The cup of blessing that we bless, is it not a sharing in the blood of the Christ?+ The loaf that we break, is it not a sharing in the body of the Christ?+ 17 Because there is one loaf, we, although many, are one body,+ for we are all partaking of that one loaf. (1 Corinthians 10: 16-17)

On that special intimate night rabbi Jeshua had taken the bread and the wine.

26 As they continued eating, Jesus took a loaf, and after saying a blessing, he broke it,+ and giving it to the disciples, he said: “Take, eat. This means my body.”+(Matthew 26:26)

19 Also, he took a loaf,+ gave thanks, broke it, and gave it to them, saying: “This means my body,+ which is to be given in your behalf.+ Keep doing this in remembrance of me.”+(Luke 22:19)

Notice how Jesus says

Keep doing this in remembrance of me.

The blood+ of the covenant,+ which is to be poured out in behalf of many+ for forgiveness of sins + should, like the blood of the lambs for the liberation of the Jews from the Egyptian slavery, be contributed to the heathen or pagan people who are willing to come under the blood of Christ, whitewashed from sin. But they should remember it and come together, more than once in a year, because Jesus asks it to do it often and whenever we do it to do it in remembrance of him.

23 For I received from the Lord what I also handed on to you, that the Lord Jesus on the night+ on which he was going to be betrayed took a loaf, 24 and after giving thanks, he broke it and said: “This means my body,+ which is in your behalf. Keep doing this in remembrance of me.”+ 25 He did the same with the cup+ also, after they had the evening meal, saying: “This cup means the new covenant+ by virtue of my blood.+ Keep doing this, whenever you drink it, in remembrance of me.” (1 Chorinthians 11: 23-26)

For that reason we should come together today and remember the Exodus out of Egypt, out of slavery of the worldly work, but also the exodus from the slavery of sin and death.

14 “‘This day will serve as a memorial for you, and you must celebrate it as a festival to Jehovah throughout your generations. As a lasting statute, you should celebrate it.(Exodus 12:14)

“1  it was now two days before Pesach (that is, the festival of matzah), and the head cohanim and the torah-teachers were trying to find some way to arrest Yeshua surreptitiously and have him put to death; 2 for they said, “not during the festival, or the people will riot.”” (Mark 14:1-2 CJB)

“10 then Y’hudah from K’riot, who was one of the twelve, went to the head cohanim in order to betray Yeshua to them. 11 they were pleased to hear this and promised to give him money. and he began looking for a good opportunity to betray Yeshua.” (Mark 14:10-11 CJB)

14 Nisan

“12  on the first day for matzah, when they slaughtered the lamb for Pesach, Yeshua’s talmidim asked him, “where do you want us to go and prepare your Seder?” 13 he sent two of his talmidim with these instructions: “go into the city, and a man carrying a jar of water will meet you. follow him; 14 and whichever house he enters, tell him that the rabbi says, ‘where is the guest room for me, where I am to eat the Pesach meal with my talmidim?’ 15 he will show you a large room upstairs, furnished and ready. make the preparations there.” 16 the talmidim went off, came to the city and found things just as he had told them they would be; and they prepared the Seder. 17 when evening came, Yeshua arrived with the twelve. 18 as they were reclining and eating, Yeshua said, “yes! I tell you that one of you is going to betray me.” 19 they became upset and began asking him, one after the other, “you don’t mean me, do you?” 20 “it’s one of the twelve,” he said to them, “someone dipping matzah in the dish with me. 21 for the son of man will die, just as the Tanakh says he will; but woe to that man by whom the son of man is betrayed! it would have been better for him had he never been born!” 22 while they were eating, Yeshua took a piece of matzah, made the b’rakhah, broke it, gave it to them and said, “take it! this is my body.” 23 also he took a cup of wine, made the b’rakhah, and gave it to them; and they all drank. 24 he said to them, “this is my blood, which ratifies the new covenant, my blood shed on behalf of many people.” (Mark 14:12-24 CJB)“14 when the time came, Yeshua and the emissaries reclined at the table, 15 and he said to them, “I have really wanted so much to celebrate this Seder with you before I die! 16 for I tell you, it is certain that I will not celebrate it again until it is given its full meaning in the kingdom of god.” 17 then, taking a cup of wine, he made the b’rakhah and said, “take this and share it among yourselves. 18 for I tell you that from now on, I will not drink the ‘fruit of the vine’ until the kingdom of god comes.” 19 also, taking a piece of matzah, he made the b’rakhah, broke it, gave it to them and said, “this is my body, which is being given for you; do this in memory of me.” 20 he did the same with the cup after the meal, saying, “this cup is the new covenant, ratified by my blood, which is being poured out for you.” (Luke 22:14-20 CJB)

“the “cup of blessing” over which we make the b’rakhah —isn’t it a sharing in the bloody sacrificial death of the Messiah? the bread we break, isn’t it a sharing in the body of the Messiah?” (1 Corinthians 10:16 CJB)

“24 an argument arose among them as to which of them should be considered the greatest. 25 but Yeshua said to them, “the kings of the Goyim lord it over them; and those in authority over them are given the title, ‘Benefactor.’ 26 but not so with you! on the contrary, let the greater among you become like the younger, and one who rules like one who serves. 27 for who is greater? the one reclining at the table? or the one who serves? it’s the one reclining at the table, isn’t it? but I myself am among you like one who serves. 28 “you are the ones who have stayed with me throughout my trials. 29 just as my father gave me the right to rule, so I give you an appointment, 30 namely, to eat and drink at my table in my kingdom and to sit on thrones judging the twelve tribes of Isra’el.” (Luke 22:24-30 CJB)

“26 after singing the Hallel, they went out to the mount of olives. 27 Yeshua said to them, “you will all lose faith in me, for theTanakh says, ‘I will strike the shepherd dead, and the sheep will be scattered.’ 28 but after I have been raised, I will go ahead of you into the Galil.”” (Mark 14:26-28 CJB)

““awake, sword, against my shepherd, against the man who is close to me,” says ADONAI-Tzva’ot. “strike the shepherd, and the sheep will be scattered; I will turn my hand against the young ones.” (Zechariah 13:7 CJB)

“31  Yeshua then said to them, “tonight you will all lose faith in me, as theTanakh says, ‘I will strike the shepherd dead, and the sheep of the flock will be scattered.’ 32 but after I have been raised, I will go ahead of you into the Galil.” 33 “I will never lose faith in you,” Kefa answered, “even if everyone else does.” 34 Yeshua said to him, “yes! I tell you that tonight before the rooster crows, you will disown me three times!” 35 “even if I must die with you,” Kefa replied, “I will never disown you!” and all the talmidim said the same thing.” (Matthew 26:31-35 CJB)

“31 Yeshua answered, “now you do believe. 32 but a time is coming—indeed it has come already—when you will be scattered, each one looking out for himself; and you will leave me all alone. yet I am not alone; because the father is with me. 33 “I have said these things to you so that, united with me, you may have shalom. in the world, you have tsuris. but be brave! I have conquered the world!”” (John 16:31-33 CJB)

“1  after Yeshua had said these things, he looked up toward heaven and said, “father, the time has come. glorify your son, so that the son may glorify you— 2 just as you gave him authority over all mankind, so that he might give eternal life to all those whom you have given him. 3 and eternal life is this: to know you, the one true god, and him whom you sent, Yeshua the Messiah. 4 “I glorified you on earth by finishing the work you gave me to do. 5 now, father, glorify me alongside yourself. give me the same glory I had with you before the world existed. 6  “I made your name known to the people you gave me out of the world. they were yours, you gave them to me, and they have kept your word. 7 now they know that everything you have given me is from you, 8 because the words you gave me I have given to them, and they have received them. they have really come to know that I came from you, and they have come to trust that you sent me.” (John 17:1-8 CJB)

Two days before the Passover

Two days after that Jesus sat on the Mount of Olives opposite the temple and Peter, James, John, and Andrew had asked him privately to tell them when the things of the end times would be coming and what the sign that these things are all about to be fulfilled would be, a woman anointed Jesus his body beforehand for the burying.

“1 Now after two days was [the feast of] the passover and the unleavened bread: and the chief priests and the scribes sought how they might take him with subtlety, and kill him: 2 for they said, Not during the feast, lest haply there shall be a tumult of the people.” (Mark 14:1-2 ASV)

“12 And on the first day of unleavened bread, when they sacrificed the passover, his disciples say unto him, Where wilt thou that we go and make ready that thou mayest eat the passover? 13 And he sendeth two of his disciples, and saith unto them, Go into the city, and there shall meet you a man bearing a pitcher of water: follow him; 14 and wheresoever he shall enter in, say to the master of the house, The Teacher saith, Where is my guest-chamber, where I shall eat the passover with my disciples? 15 And he will himself show you a large upper room furnished [and] ready: and there make ready for us. 16 And the disciples went forth, and came into the city, and found as he had said unto them: and they made ready the passover. 17 And when it was evening he cometh with the twelve.” (Mark 14:12-17 ASV)

Like all other Jews Jesus and his disciples went to prepare the Passover.  When evening came, Jesus arrived with the twelve at the upperroom. While they were reclining at the table eating, he said, “I tell you the truth; one of you will betray me — one who is eating with me.” They were saddened, and one by one they said to him, “Surely not I?”  “It is one of the Twelve,” he replied, “one who dips bread into the bowl with me.  The Son of Man will go just as it is written about him. But woe to that man who betrays the Son of Man! It would be better for him if he had not been born.”

The disciples knew this was preparation day for the Passover celebration! It was not the Passover itself but the preparation, one day before Passover, but part of the celebration days! That evening Jesus did something remarkable which made the 14th of Nisan even more special. While they were eating, Jesus took bread, gave thanks and broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying, “Take it; this is my body.” Then he took the cup, gave thanks and offered it to them, and they all drank from it.  “This is my blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many,” he said to them. “I tell you the truth; I will not drink again of the fruit of the vine until that day when I drink it anew in the kingdom of God.”

“21 For the Son of man goeth, even as it is written of him: but woe unto that man through whom the Son of man is betrayed! good were it for that man if he had not been born. 22 And as they were eating, he took bread, and when he had blessed, he brake it, and gave to them, and said, Take ye: this is my body. 23 And he took a cup, and when he had given thanks, he gave to them: and they all drank of it. 24 And he said unto them, This is my blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many. 25 Verily I say unto you, I shall no more drink of the fruit of the vine, until that day when I drink it new in the kingdom of God. 26 And when they had sung a hymn, they went out unto the mount of Olives.” (Mark 14:21-26 ASV)

Knowing the hour had come, Preparation Day and the Breaking of the Bread

Later on the apostles remembered that day and also took the breaking of the bread as an action to be done in remembrance of Jesus.

“23 For I received of the Lord that which also I delivered unto you, that the Lord Jesus in the night in which he was betrayed took bread; 24 and when he had given thanks, he brake it, and said, This is my body, which is for you: this do in remembrance of me. 25 In like manner also the cup, after supper, saying, This cup is the new covenant in my blood: this do, as often as ye drink [it], in remembrance of me. 26 For as often as ye eat this bread, and drink the cup, ye proclaim the Lord’s death till he come. 27 Wherefore whosoever shall eat the bread or drink the cup of the Lord in an unworthy manner, shall be guilty of the body and the blood of the Lord. 28 But let a man prove himself, and so let him eat of the bread, and drink of the cup. 29 For he that eateth and drinketh, eateth and drinketh judgment unto himself, if he discern not the body.” (1 Corinthians 11:23-29 ASV)

“Now before the feast of the passover, Jesus knowing that his hour was come that he should depart out of this world unto his Father, having loved his own that were in the world, he loved them unto the end.” (John 13:1 ASV)
“They lead Jesus therefore from Caiaphas into the Praetorium: and it was early; and they themselves entered not into the Praetorium, that they might not be defiled, but might eat the passover.” (John 18:28 ASV)
“Now it was the Preparation of the passover: it was about the sixth hour. And he saith unto the Jews, Behold, your King!” (John 19:14 ASV)
“The Jews therefore, because it was the Preparation, that the bodies should not remain on the cross upon the sabbath (for the day of that sabbath was a high [day]), asked of Pilate that their legs might be broken, and [that] they might be taken away.” (John 19:31 ASV)

Since the disciples knew that Nisan 14 was “preparation day,” that is why they came to Jeshua after sunset, at the beginning of Nisan 14, and asked him where he wanted them to prepare for the upcoming Passover, which would of course be Nisan 15, after the Passover lambs were slain in the “evening” of Nisan 14, toward sunset, “at the going down of the sun” [as it descended in the afternoon sky present tense, not past tense] (Deuteronomium 16:6).

“but at the place which Jehovah your god shall choose to place his name in, there you shall sacrifice the passover at evening, at the going of the sun, at the time that you came out of Egypt.” (Deuteronomy 16:6 MKJV)

If Passover was indeed the beginning of Nisan 14, then the disciples waited until the very “Last Minute” to even ask Jeshua about making preparations for the Passover! Such a theory does not make sense and would not be according the Jewish custom. Mary (Miriam, Maria), the mother of Jesus belonged to the Essenes, a sect of Second Temple Judaism, which was very devout. They had a strong the belief in communality and commitment to a strict observance of Sabbath and holy days. The Essenes chose not to possess slaves, but served each other and held communal meetings, meals and religious celebrations. The Nazarean – they were Jews by nationality – acknowledged Moses and believed that he had received laws which all had to be observed and taken seriously. Jeshua the Nazarene (better known today as Jesus) brought up by his mother was also used to keep those holy days and took the preparation for them also serious.

    The story of the preparations for the Passover Meal is itself introductory to the account of the Last Supper in Luke 22: 14-23.

    The sacrificing of the Passover lamb (Lk 22: 7b) was not done on the first day of the Unleavened Bread (that is, on 15th of Nisan) but on the previous day (that is, on 14th of Nisan). In Luke 22: 7a therefore, “the day of Unleavened Bread” by itself would mean “the first day of Unleavened Bread,” namely, 15th of Nisan, but the addition in Luke 22: 7b would point to 14th of Nisan.

One year later they would still be young and in the prime of their life, when they are sacrificed. 3.5 year old male sheep are called Rams, not lambs. ;)  Now Yeshua was not a 1-year-old when he was executed, but His ministry was. And you couldn’t be a “Rabbi” until you were in your 29th year of age. (Eastern cultures your count age from birth, so you are born 1-year-old. And with Yeshua’s birthday being Nisan 1, he would be in his 29th year when He became a Rabbi and called disciples to follow Him.)

Yeshua’s had the seder and Pesach meal with his disciples in the upper room, on the proper day given by God! Which began at sunset that Tuesday night. Yeshua was then taken from the Gathsemene, tried at night (illegally), brought before Pilate,  flogged and beaten.

Taking the Bible as a lead

In Jesus days people came together in the synagogue but also in their homes to study the rolls of the holy writers. For them it was clear that God had given these people the power and facilities to write down Gods Word. For the followers of Christ it was clear that they had to take the stories about Christ Jesus and the writing of his apostles also into account. The books of the Old time received a brother in the writings of the new time, after Jesus his resurrection. The Old and New Testament became the two pillars of educational material to build up faith and to keep to the Commandments of God.

Enthusiast followers of Jesus took the time to come to study these writings, which we know now as the Bible. They felt united in holding that the sacred Scriptures, Old and New Testaments, are inspired and are the final authority for authentic truth. They did not doubt the countenance of these writings and knew that if they prayed to God they also would receive guidance to follow and to comprehend them. They followed the rules of the Scriptures and wanted to establish their beliefs and faith in beliefs that harmonize all scriptures on each subject. The apostles had warned them to be careful not be carried away by worldly thoughts and that they should not make non-scriptural words to an article of faith.

In the early times of this time account, some had seen that Jesus was wholly flesh while on earth. While Jesus was miraculously begotten by God through the Holy Spirit in the womb of Mary, they accepted that the Bible implies that she did not remain a virgin thereafter and many of the early Christians had met the other children by Joseph after the birth of Jesus. One of Jesus brothers had followed and believed in him. The people around Jesus could witness him. They had witnessed or heard about the many miracles, and about the most curious event, namely that this holy man had been raised from death. But there were also many who had nothing seen and by the growing years had nobody in their circles who had met people who had known Jesus in real life. They had to believe without seeing.

Preaching Jesus

Studying the Bible those people interested in the Word of God were fully convinced that this Nazarene Jew by his death had brought them salvation. They knew that man is mortal by nature, and that immortality became available now, but only by meeting conditions of obedience. They held, as we hold today, that the human soul is not a distinct entity, but is the result of the union of the body and the breath, or spark, of life, and that death is the dissolution of these two elements. Jesus had died, been put in the grave, but after his resurrection had gone up to his Father to which he always stayed humble. Jesus always had pointed out to his Father as the One who did everything and to whom we had to give honour. Therefore they did not accept the position of co-eternity or co-equality between the Father and the Son. But they were pleased that since his resurrection Jesus had received the divine nature and could be the mediator between them and God.

Believing that Adam and Eve were created perfect, the believers position is that the sin of disobedience in the Garden of Eden resulted in all their posterity being born under the blight of sin, imperfection, and death. Because death is the dissolution of body and breath, every Bible Student should be aware that the soul that sins dies goes out of existence, and that we cannot escape death and the return to dust and ash. But in Christ Jesus they found the promised Messiah who was going to return. It is he who shall then start the resurrection process which begins in the future kingdom of Messiah. He had given his body as a ransom at the cross of Calvary. This peace offering is efficacious for all who have ever died. It promises resuscitation for all humanity in Christ’s 1000-year kingdom, along with the opportunity to obtain and maintain perfect human life for eternity. The ransom also provides for the rehabilitation of planet earth to perfect Edenic conditions.

From Pentecost onwards many thousands started to look forward to the return of Christ or Second Advent. At his first advent, Jesus had begun calling out from mankind a special class to be his church, or bride. To these he promised a part in heaven with himself and the Father, and a kingdom role of reigning over mankind with himself for blessing all the families of the earth. Those who accept this invitation make a complete consecration or commitment to do the will of God as they see it revealed and at the cost of a surrender of the right to a life on earth. This consecration is witnessed by a baptism (complete water immersion,). The expectation that Jesus Christ would return to finish the work that he began two thousand years ago became an important part of their faith. They followed the advice Jesus and his apostles had given, to study the Word of God and to come regularly together, also to remember the Breaking of the Bread as a sign of the New Covenant.

To organize such meetings they had to find places where they could meet, certainly after they were not welcome any more in the synagogues. In the different villages and small communities small groups were formed. By giving many ‘house parties’ the ‘house churches‘ were formed. Each group selected its leaders (elders and deacons) by a total vote of their consecrated members, and cooperated with other congregations as determined by that local group. But such meetings or gatherings brought also expenses. To cover them they paid entirely by freewill voluntary offerings with no collections of mandated costs.

Also today we as Bible Students want to keep to the ordinances given by God and by Jesus and our ministries are kept according the Biblical ways and serves on a non-paid and voluntary basis.
