Mark 11:27-33 – Questions of Authority
|| Matthew 21:23-27;[1] Luke 20:1-8
MK11:27 So now they returned to Jerusalem again and as he was walking in the Temple courtyard the chief priests, Bible Copyists and Jewish elders approached him. MK11:28 They asked Jesus: “By what authority do you do these things? Who gave you this authority to do them?” MK11:29 Now Jesus answered them: “Let me ask you one question – and you give me the answer – then I will tell you by what authority I do these things. MK11:30 Was the baptism of John from Heaven or a human source? Tell me.” MK11:31 Then they began to debate among themselves: “If we say, ‘From heaven,’ he will say: ‘Why then did you not believe?’ MK11:32 On the other hand, if we say, ‘From humans’” – well, now then they feared the people, for they all considered John a prophet for sure. MK11:33 So they answered and said: “We do not know.” Jesus responded to them: “Neither am I telling you by what authority I do all these things.”
