Matthew 10:24-31 – Do Not Fear – Preach!

MT10:24 “A disciple[1] is not above the teacher nor a slave above his Master. MT10:25 It is satisfactory if the disciple becomes like his teacher,[2] and the slave like his Master. If they call the lord of the house ‘Beelzebul,’[3] how much more those of the household. MT10:26 So, you should not fear them.[4] For there is nothing concealed[5] which will not be revealed,[6] and nothing hidden[7] which will not become known. MT10:27 What I tell you in the dark, tell in the light; and, what your ear hears, preach on the housetops.[8] MT10:28 Do not fear those who kill the body but are unable to kill the soul.[9] Rather, continue to fear the One capable of destroying[10] both soul and body in Gehenna.[11] MT10:29 Are not two sparrows[12] sold for an assarion?[13] And not one of them falls to the ground without your Father’s [awareness].[14] MT10:30 The very hairs of your head are numbered.[15] MT10:31 So, do not be afraid. You differ [greatly] from many sparrows.[16]

[1] Disciple: The Greek is MATHETES from which the English “mathematics” comes. Though “disciple” is related to “discipline” or that great effort to learn math. The word “Disciple” occurs 76 times in Matthew, 46 times in Mark, 38 times in Luke, 79 times in John, and 30 times in Acts. The word occurs nowhere else in the Christian Bible. No woman is ever called a “disciple” until Tabitha (Dorcas).

[2] Disciple becomes like his teacher: Jesus’ main point is that the disciples can expect to be condemned and spoken against during their work. This should not surprise them because the same is happening to their Teacher. They become like their Teacher in sharing his abuse and reproach.

[3] Beelzebul: Possibly a cryptic name for Satan meaning “Lord (owner) of Dung” or “Lord (owner) of Flies.” The contemptuous designation occurs as an accusation against the Nazarene at Matthew 12:24, 27; Mark 3:22; Luke 11:15, 18. Compare 2 Kings 1:2.

[4] Not fear them: Courage is an absolutely necessity for a disciple of the Nazarene. Jesus knows that some households and some towns will not accept or receive the disciples well. He knows they are likely to call his apostles names. Note what he had told them in his Mountain Teachings (Matthew 5:10-12). Fear is a tool of the Devil.

[5] Concealed: Those who speak evil against the disciples will be exposed in the Judgment (Matthew 12:36). Secret slander will finally be revealed.

[6] Revealed: The Greek is APOKALYPSTHESETAI. Compare Mark 4:22; Luke 8:17; 1 Corinthians 4:5; John 3:19-21. Imagine the evil talk which has gone on throughout the centuries as inquisitors plotted to entrap or accuse innocent Christians?

[7] Hidden: The Greek is CRYPTON. PME: nor any thing private which will not be made public.

[8] Tell in the light; and, what your ear hears, preach on the housetops: Jesus often spoke to his disciples in private (Matthew 17:19; 20:17; 24:3; Mark 4:34; 6:31; 7:33; 9:28; 13:3). He wants his disciples to preach these things. Compare Luke 12:3. NEB: you must repeat in broad daylight; BAS: what comes to your ear secretly; MOF: what you hear in a whisper.

[9] Are unable to kill the soul: This verse is viewed by some to prove the soul is immortal and continues to exist after death. Jesus possibly has in mind the future life as a spirit person. He is saying: while your persecutors may kill you physically, they cannot destroy your True Life. Compare Luke 12:4; 21:19. The Greek for soul here is PSYCHEN and between the Jewish Greek Bible (LXX) and the Christian Bible occurs about 1,000 times. Of these over 100 state the soul is mortal and destructible. Not once is the soul ever stated to be immortal as in the Platonic idea. See commentaries and dictionaries under “soul.”

[10] The One capable of destroying: That is The God. Note that Jesus says the soul is mortal and destructible.

[11] Gehenna: Some render the Greek GEHENNE as hell (KJV), the pit (GDSP), the fires of destruction (PME). See notes on Matthew 5:22. Gehenna is a symbol of eternal destruction and called “Second Death” in Revelation 20:14, 15.

[12] Sparrows: On another occasion Jesus uses five sparrows. The Greek allows for any small bird. Such birds were sold for a penny, roasted over a spit (Light From the Ancient East, by A. Deissmann, 1965, pp. 273, 274).

[13] Assarion: A Roman coin about a half-penny. The widow’s LEPTON was ten times less. One-sixteenth of a denarius. KJV: a farthing; ASV: a penny.

[14] Father’s [awareness]: The literal Greek is not one falls without your Father. TCNT: without your Father’s knowledge; BECK: with your Father’s permission. Jesus teaches how sensitive and aware the Life Source of the Universe is. Some Christians loose every bit of self-worth or self-esteem. This thought ought to encourage any that just as God notes the birds, He is well aware of our own plights. Compare 1 Peter 5:7.

[15] Hairs of your head are numbered: Compare Luke 12:7. Or, KNX: he takes every hair of your head into his reckoning. Some estimate the average head of hair to include about 100,000. The hair of the head is used metamorphicly in the Bible (1 Samuel 14:45; 2 Samuel 14:11; 1 Kings 1:52; Psalm 40:12; 69:4; Luke 21:18; Acts 27:34).

[16] You differ [greatly] from many sparrows: KJV: you are of more value than many sparrows; WEY: you are more precious than a multitude of sparrows

Be strong

Inculcate God’s words and speak of them

6 These words that I am commanding you today must be on your heart, 7 and you must inculcate them in* your sons+ and speak of them when you sit in your house and when you walk on the road and when you lie down and when you get up.+ .—Deut. 6:6-7.

inculcate them in: Or “repeat them to; impress them upon.”

• Genesis 18:19: 19 For I have come to know him in order that he may command his sons and his household after him to keep Jehovah’s way by doing what is right and just,+ so that Jehovah may bring about what he has promised concerning Abraham.”

• Deuteronomy 4:9: 9 “Just be careful and watch yourself closely,* so that you may not forget the things that your eyes have seen and so that they may not depart from your heart all the days of your life. You must also make them known to your sons and to your grandsons.+

• Hebrews 12:6: 6 for those whom Jehovah* loves he disciplines, in fact, he scourges* everyone whom he receives as a son.”+

when you lie down and when you get up:

• Deuteronomy 11:19: 19 Teach them to your children, speaking about them when you sit in your house and when you walk on the road and when you lie down and when you get up.+

Generally, children love their parents, and parents love their children. This is especially true in Christian households.

Although parents and children yearn to be close to one another, communication is sometimes difficult. Many families find that it is challenging to have enough time for meaningful communication. That was not always the case. In ancient Israel, children spent the day either with their mother at home or with their father in the fields or at his workplace. There was plenty of time for children and parents to be together and converse. Consequently, parents were in a position to get to know the needs, desires, and personality of their children. Likewise, there was time and sufficient opportunity for children to get to know their parents well. How different life is today! w13 5/15 4:2-4

Keep the Lines of Communication Open

It is important that children early on become accustomed to communicating with their parents. Otherwise, when the children are adolescents and perhaps face problems, they will not think of their parents as friends whom they can talk to.

How can you help them to open their hearts? (Proverbs 20:5) says:

“Counsel in the heart of a man is as deep waters, but the man of discernment is one that will draw it up.”

By using viewpoint questions, such as “What do you think?” parents can encourage their children to express their thoughts and feelings.

What will you do if your child makes a serious mistake? That is the time when he needs kind consideration. Control your emotions while you listen to your child. A father says this about his way of dealing with such a situation:

“When the children make mistakes, I try not to overreact. I sit down and listen to what they have to say. I try to grasp the situation. When I find it difficult to control my spirit, I wait a while and calm down.”

If you control your emotions and listen, the correction you give will more readily be accepted.

John 17: 3 This means everlasting life,+ their coming to know you,* the only true God,+ and the one whom you sent, Jesus Christ.+

1 John 5: 20 But we know that the Son of God has come,+ and he has given us insight* so that we may gain the knowledge of the one who is true. And we are in union with the one who is true,+ by means of his Son Jesus Christ. This is the true God and life everlasting.+

1 Timothy 2: 2-4: 2 concerning kings and all those who are in high positions,*+ so that we may go on leading a calm and quiet life with complete godly devotion and seriousness.+ 3 This is fine and acceptable in the sight of our Savior, God,+ 4 whose will is that all sorts of people should be saved+ and come to an accurate knowledge of truth.

Je suis Dieu, ton Dieu+.  8 Ce n’est pas pour tes sacrifices que je te reprends+ ni [pour] tes holocaustes [qui sont] devant moi constamment+.  9 Je ne veux pas prendre de ta maison un taureau+ ni de tes enclos des boucs. 10 Car tous les animaux sauvages de la forêt m’appartiennent+, les bêtes sur mille montagnes+. 11 Je connais bien toutes les créatures ailées des montagnes+, et avec moi sont les foules d’animaux de la campagne+. 12 Si j’avais faim, je ne te le dirais pas ; car il m’appartient, le sol productif*+ et sa plénitude+. 13 Vais-je manger la chair des puissants [taureaux]+,et le sang des boucs, vais-je le boire+ ? 14 Offre à Dieu, pour ton sacrifice, l’action de grâces+, et acquitte-toi de tes vœux envers le Très-Haut+ ; 15 et appelle-moi au jour de la détresse+. Je te délivrerai et tu me glorifieras+. ” 16 Mais au méchant Dieu devra dire+ : “ De quel droit énumères-tu mes prescriptions+ et portes-tu mon alliance* dans ta bouche+ ? 17 En effet, toi, tu as haï la discipline+, et sans cesse tu jettes mes paroles derrière toi+.

Éphésiens 4:11: 11 Et il a donné certains comme apôtres+, certains comme prophètes+, certains comme évangélisateurs*+, certains comme bergers et enseignants+,

Mais nous, nous avons la pensée+ de Christ*.

Isaïe 40 :13: 13 Qui a pris les dimensions de l’esprit de Jéhovah, et qui, étant son homme de conseil, peut lui faire connaître quelque chose+ ?

Éphésiens 3:5, 6:5 Dans d’autres générations, ce [secret]+ n’a pas été porté à la connaissance des fils des hommes comme il a été révélé maintenant+ à ses saints apôtres et prophètes+ par [l’]esprit, 6 à savoir que des gens des nations devaient être cohéritiers et comembres du corps+ et avoir part avec nous à la promesse*+ en union avec Christ Jésus par le moyen de la bonne nouvelle.

Colossiens 2:2: 2 afin que leur cœur soit consolé+ [et] qu’ils soient harmonieusement unis ensemble dans l’amour+ et pour toute la richesse de la pleine certitude de [leur] intelligence+, pour une connaissance exacte du saint secret de Dieu, c’est-à-dire Christ*+.

Proverbes 23: 9 Ne parle pas aux oreilles d’un homme stupide+, car il méprisera tes paroles avisées+.

2 Samuel 23:2: 2 C’est l’esprit de Jéhovah qui a parlé par moi+, et sa parole* a été sur ma langue+.

Elle te glorifiera parce que tu l’étreins+. 9 Elle donnera à ta tête une guirlande de charme+ ; elle te fera don d’une couronne de beauté+. ”

Proverbes 15 :14: 14 Le cœur intelligent recherche la connaissance+, mais la bouche des stupides aspire à la sottise+.

Matthieu 13:23: 23 Quant à celui qui a été semé sur la belle terre, c’est celui qui entend la parole et en saisit le sens, qui porte alors du fruit et produit celui-ci cent fois autant, celui-là soixante, l’autre trente+. ”

Hébreux 5 :14: 14 Mais la nourriture solide est pour les hommes mûrs, pour ceux qui, par l’usage, ont les facultés de perception*+ exercées* à distinguer et le bien et le mal+.

Daniel 1:17: 17 Quant à ces enfants, les quatre, à eux le [vrai] Dieu donna connaissance et perspicacité en toute écriture et sagesse+ ; et Daniel avait de l’intelligence en toutes sortes de visions et de rêves+.

Proverbs 21: 30 Il n’y a ni sagesse, ni discernement, ni conseil en opposition avec Jéhovah+.

Proverbs 19: 21 Nombreux sont les plans dans le cœur de l’homme*+, mais c’est le conseil de Jéhovah qui tiendra+.

2 Timothée 2: 7-10: 7 Pense constamment* à ce que je dis ; le Seigneur, en effet, te donnera du discernement+ en toutes choses. 8 Rappelle-toi que Jésus Christ a été relevé d’entre les morts+ et qu’il était de la semence de David+, selon la bonne nouvelle que je prêche+ ; 9 à propos de laquelle je supporte le mal jusqu’à [porter] des liens+ comme un malfaiteur. Jean 17 : 3 Ceci signifie la vie éternelle+ : qu’ils apprennent à te connaître*+, toi, le seul vrai Dieu+, et celui que tu as envoyé, Jésus Christ+.

1 Jean 5: 20 Mais nous savons que le Fils de Dieu est venu+ et qu’il nous a donné l’intelligence*+ pour que nous parvenions à connaître le véritable+. Et nous sommes en union+ avec le véritable, par le moyen de son Fils Jésus Christ. C’est là le vrai+ Dieu et la vie éternelle+.
